Description: The dissertation writing process is exciting and rewarding! But let’s face it: successfully writing a dissertation involves intentional time management, many steps, and several drafts and revisions. There are times when the words will easily flow and other times where students might feel stuck. What are some effective strategies for getting words on the page? In this workshop, Writing Center staff, an expert faculty mentor to doctoral students, and a recent Texas State doctoral alum will share tips and strategies for making progress in writing the dissertation. All dissertation students at any stage of the dissertation process are welcome! Please email Dr. Patti Giuffre (pg07@txstate.edu) with your main questions for the panel before February 20th. You will also be able to ask questions during the Q & A.
Date/time: Thursday February 20, noon-1:00
Presenters:
Dr. Carlton Fong, Associate Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, conducts research and publishes on motivation and self-regulation.
Dr. Joanna Collins, Associate Director of The Writing Center, has done many presentations for graduate students on strategies for dealing with writer’s block.
Dr. Samuel Kimmell, TXST alum and Project Manager for Research Development, completed a Ph.D. and M.B.A. concurrently.
Moderator: Dr. Donna Vandiver, Associate Dean, The Graduate College

This workshop combines reflection activities with practical strategies to increase your confidence as a writer and improve your writing productivity. The session will challenge common writing myths and address typical pitfalls that often hold writers back, such as waiting for inspiration, “binge writing,” all-or-nothing thinking, and more. Participants will identify their own attitudes and beliefs about writing, learn techniques to shift their writing mindset, and practice exercises to build writing stamina and promote positive writing experiences. Participants will also have the opportunity to build their own writing community by signing up to join a writing group. We recommend bringing materials to type or write with to this session!
